Title: Musical Improvisation - A Space for the Discussion The Japanese Association for the Study of Musical Improvisation (JASMIM) was organized as a space for not only the academic discussion of musical improvisation but also musical improvisation itself on September 2008. The first congress of JASMIM will be held as follows: We welcome you to join us. Date: 20th (Sun), 21st (Mon) September, 2009 Place: the Music Building (C Building), the Graduate School of Human Development and Environment Kobe University http://www.h.kobe-u.ac.jp/ The Fee: 2 days - 5,000 yen (for the member), 7,000 yen (for the non-member) 1 day - 3,000 yen (for the member), 4,000 yen (for the non-member) There will be the celebration from 6 pm on 20th. The Japanese Association for the Study of Musical Improvisation (JASMIM) will be set up on 14th of September 2008. This association will be put a space for not only academic discussing musical improvisation but also musical improvisation itself. And it is organized by mainly researchers and performers from musical education, musicology, ethnomusicology, music therapy, performance and criticism. Prospectus of JASMIM states the following: Musical improvisation may be seen in almost every music culture. Improvisation has significant meanings in many kinds of fields, for example in jazz, rock, contemporary music, christian organ music, and folk music(India or Iran etc.). We think that what is necessary for us now is a space for not only academic discussing musical improvisation but also musical improvisation itself. We would therefore like to set up The Japanese Association of the Study of Musical Improvisation, and we invite everyone who is interested to join us. If you have an interest in musical improvisation, and want to join us, you will get the qualifications for associative member. In this web-site (http://jasmim.net/english/), you will apply for our membership. The establishment meeting of JASMIM will be held on 13:30, 14th of September 2008 at 111 the Music bldg. the Graduate School of Human Development and Environment Kobe University, and from 17:00, we will hold a party. This establishment meeting will be had with improvisation by participants like a unique association for musical improvisation. |

Musical improvisation may be seen in almost every music culture. The only exception was modern western music culture that depended greatly on notation and was not a little removed improvisation. Improvisation has significant meanings in many kinds of fields, for example in jazz, rock, contemporary music, christian organ music, and folk music (India or Iran etc.) It was in 1980 that Derek Bailey who proposed 'free improvisation' wrote the book 'Improvisation' Since then, the study of musical improvisation has increased in fields such as ethnomusicology, musicology, and music therapy. Recently, a lot of challenging and stimulating articles and books have been written, which makes clearer the course that musical improvisation is now taking. Of course Bailey's thought has also been affecting current music little by little. In addition, postmodern philosophy prepared the way for us to think about musical improvisation freely. In such circumstances, we think that what is necessary for us now is a space for not only academic discussing musical improvisation but also musical improvisation itself. We would therefore like to set up The Japanese Association for the Study of Musical Improvisation, and we invite everyone who is interested to join us.
